Do extensions damage hair?

Applied and maintained properly, they should not. When damage happens, it almost always traces back to one of six causes.

What causes damage

  1. The wrong methodHeavy wefts on fine hair, or beads on silky hair that slip and pull.
  2. Too much hairMore weight than your natural hair can carry.
  3. Placement too close to the scalpCreates tension every time you move.
  4. Overdue maintenanceGrown-out attachments twist, mat and drag on the root.
  5. Poor aftercareSleeping on wet bonds and skipping brushing cause matting.
  6. Removing them yourselfPulling or cutting out extensions takes natural hair with them.

Safe removal

Every method has its own removal. Tape-ins use a solvent that dissolves the adhesive. Keratin bonds are softened with a bond remover and gently crushed. I-tips and nano rings are opened with pliers. Wefts are unpicked or the beads opened. A professional removal includes detangling the shed hair that has collected at each attachment, which is normal: most people shed 50 to 100 hairs a day, and extensions hold them in place until removal.

  • !
